Below are the statements provided by the candidates:

Alyssa Vorobey:

Hello!

I’m a third year linguistics specialist prone to going down paper-reading research rabbitholes. I’ve done a few linguistics RA tasks and a lot of LIN courses, where I’ve encountered (and really enjoyed) loads of linguistic areas.

One of my favourite parts of lin courses and of doing research has been discussing the readings with people, both to critique and to examine the methodology, and I’d love to do more of that here.
Overall, I’m excited to delve deeper into semantics, syntax, sociolinguistics, phonetics, phonology, prrception, and even computational linguistics through coordinating the reading group!!

Octavia Mok:

Hi, I’m Octavia! I’m a second year linguistics specialist and psychology major, hoping to enter SLP. You may know me from class or have seen my name on the SLUGS discord where I am fairly active. I have been interested in linguistics for a while even before university, particularly through conlanging (creating languages) as a hobby. As a result I am very passionate about linguistics and have experience reading academic linguistics material even outside of school. Some of my particular interests are historical linguistics, phonetics and unusual grammatical features of languages, though I like pretty much everything that the field covers. As for outside of class, I attend SLUGS events fairly frequently and I enjoy spending time with fellow linguistics students at both our socials and study groups. I am also currently leading an RSG for LIN228 and intend to hold one for LIN229 next term. I was also an Orientation Leader at Victoria College this summer and have been an active member of Vic Chorus since I started here at UofT.
