Elections 23–24: Social events coordinator

Fiona McKay

Hi! My name is Fiona McKay and I’m a first year student studying Linguistics, Cognitive Science and Art History. I’m applying for the Social Events Coordinator position for the 2023-2024 year, where I hope to facilitate and run more CommuniTeas, Trivia Nights and other events for all students studying in the linguistics field, and also hoping to also organise merch for anyone who’s interested in wearing a slug!

I have some experience setting up and organising events – I helped organise large parties for private cruises in the Toronto Harbour, and also have experience with social media interactions, to engage interest for upcoming treats and hangouts!

Erin Hui

Hey! I’m Erin, a second-year student studying Linguistics, Drama and Mathematics, running for Social Events Coordinator of SLUGS in the upcoming year. Over the past year, I worked as a UofT tour guide where I’ve been able to hone a multitude of skills relevant to this role: communication and interpersonal skills, adaptability, and leadership skills. Aside from leading tour groups of 15-30 prospective students on a regular basis, I also aided in organizing and hosting recruitment events consisting of over 100k attendees (e.g., UofT’s Fall Campus Day and the Ontario Universities’ Fair). Furthermore, the cofounder of a food waste project where I spearheaded numerous community-wide social and fundraising events. All in all, I have considerable experience in working in a team, leading and organizing community-based activities, and creating positive experiences for participants in these events. I would love to utilize my skills to further foster the sense of community and support between us undergraduate Linguistics students.

I’d not only like to increase the frequency of SLUGS socials and hope to plan events in conjunction with other UofT undergraduate societies, but I’d also like to introduce more interactive and collaborative events and activities related to this field that serve the purpose of being a social event but also an academically and mentally stimulating one that could aid our learning (e.g., Linguistics Game Night where we can play IPA hangman and more!)

Kate (Jingyi) Zhang

Hi everyone! My name is Kate, and I am running to be your Social Events Coordinator.

I am finishing my second year majoring in linguistics and specializing in psychology. Throughout this year, I have attended various delightful social events organized by SLUGS. I appreciate this welcoming community and wish to make valuable contribution in the future. By talking with current SLUGS members, I have gained insight into what sorts of event can help linguistics students to build connections with each other. I worked as student volunteer during TULCON 16 and gained precious experience in event organization. Moreover, by participating CommuniTEA, Pub Night, and Movie Night, I have clear understanding about the process of planning out social events in SLUGS. As your Social Events Coordinator, I would like to make improvement in themes and activities for CommuniTEA. I also would like to increase the amount of collaborated events with other course unions such as Movie Night about cognitive science or psycholinguistics. I want to make SLUGS social events to be beneficial opportunities for communicating as well as networking. I hope you’ll consider voting for me!
